Deborah Woody is a graduate of MTSU with a degree in music business, and double minors in music and mass communication with an emphasis on education. She has taught guitar and piano for 25 years and homeschooled for 16 years. Using her interest in all things old and also practical, she has taught both history and finance to homeschoolers and in co-ops for the last 12 years. As a homeschooling parent, she has developed interesting ways to combine curriculums while ensuring that all her classes meet the requirements under Tennessee law.
This one day, 17 week personal finance course is one of the most important classes that a student can take. Not only is the class required for graduation, but it is necessary for life! Using the concepts of Larry Burkett and Dave Ramsey, the curriculum teaches the students financial terms and finance concepts. Students complete a W-4, fill out a checkbook, analyze types of insurance, create a car project, and also create a housing project. These projects are placed in a portfolio, which is used to develop a working budget for someone who is just getting out on their own for the first time. The student use real world numbers to learn real world lesson while playing games and enjoying fun activities along the way. Ever play spoons to learn about different types of insurance?
